January 17, 1951 fire broke out in the electrical circuits. The top floor burned, but the fire was put out and court records were saved by volunteers who carried them out. In the end, most of the damage was caused by the water used to put the fire out. The fire consumed the ornate bell-tower, which was later replaced with the much plainer present one. The loss was estimated at $300,000. The present courthouse was built in 1868 at a cost of $30,000, on the same spot as the previous one. The previous courthouse was built in1819, and was built in an octagonal shape patterned after the Pike County courthouse. The upper rooms of that courthouse served as an armory for the local militia, and long after the militia stopped using the old flintlock rifles and pistols, they were kept there as a source of hunting guns for local young men. A fire broke out in 1860 across the street from the courthouse, just when most of the town's men were away at a political meeting in Portsmouth. To stop the fire from spreading to the whole town, the women and few men who remained had to tear down a building at the end of the block. They succeeded, but in the bedlam no one noticed that the fire jumped across the street to the courthouse. It was too late, and they could only watch the courthouse burn down. The last execution to take place in Jackson County was in November of 1883. The order was signed by then Governor Charles Foster.
